Respiratory gas for newborns gets Australian approval

A new gas designed to treat newborns with hypoxic respiratory failure (HRF) has won full approval from authorities in Australia.

Ikaria Holdings announced that the country's Therapeutic Goods Administration had given the firm the right to market INOmax nitric oxide in Australia, following its previous orphan drug designation.

Parkinson's drug to undergo phase III trials

Merck Serono is to launch phase III clinical trials of a drug designed to complement dopamine treatments for patients in the early stages of Parkinson's disease.

The firm plans to recruit more than 650 participants who have had the disease for less than five years for the study, designed to examine the safety and efficacy of different dosing regimes of its oral drug Safinamide.

Cancer pain drug to launch new trials

Phase II and III trials of a new cannabinoid based drug designed to treat severe cancer pain are to begin at around 40 research centres, it has been announced.

GW Pharmaceuticals and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co said that the studies are being carried out to examine the efficacy and safety of Sativex, an oro-mucosal spray designed to relieve the pain caused by some forms of advanced cancer even if a patient is receiving opioids.

Solid tumour therapy begins phase IIa trials

New phase IIa clinical trials have launched to examine the effectiveness of a drug to treat advanced solid tumours.

VioQuest Pharmaceuticals said that the tests on its protein tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor Lenocta will "evaluate the clinical efficacy and biological effectiveness" of the drug when given to patients at "the highest tolerable dose".
